Flossing

Oh, flossing — the daily task that many of us just leave to tomorrow. Whether it’s from irritated gums or the fact that you're tired of losing blood flow to your fingers, we totally get why many people don’t make flossing their top priority. Fortunately, flossing doesn’t have to be such a difficult task. To ensure you are on top of your oral health and flossing like a pro, here’s what you’ll want to know:

Frequency Means Less Bleeding

If you hate the site of a little blood or are hesitant to floss because it always results in bloody gums, we have some good news for you — it’s only temporary. Bleeding gums is caused by gingivitis which occurs due to poor gum health. The more your floss, the better your gum health will be. With regular flossing, you’ll notice the bleeding will lessen and eventually subside.

When to Floss

The big debate on when to floss before or after brushing is one that often ends with mixed results. The truth is, as long as you are doing it with each brush, you are still practicing proper hygiene. To us, that is still a step in the right direction.

Find The Perfect Fit

Not all floss is made the same, and if you are having trouble finding the perfect fit, it might be time to try a different brand or style. If you are continually breaking the floss due to lack of space in your teeth, look for a thicker strand or brand designed for that. If you have trouble reaching the back of your mouth using both hands, try purchasing floss picks instead.

Get The Right Angle

It’s all about technique. As you begin moving the floss back and forth in a sawing motion, you'll want to ensure it is hugging your tooth in a “c” shape. Gently slide up and down the surface of the tooth 8-10 times, stopping slightly above the gumline. Repeat this process for the tooth on the other side. Remember: Don’t skip a tooth!
